The song discusses the disdain of spoiled kids growing up over an atmospheric bounce that sounds tailor-made for Earl to spit the incredible verse he has at the end. One of my favorite tracks off the album is “Super Rich Kids” featuring a flawless verse and chorus from Earl Sweatshirt. I do not give a single fuck about any kind of homosexual tendencies or whatever may have you.

But it also seems to me that Frank’s saying that he was there for Forrest, and he just ran past the end zone, and now Frank doesn’t know where Forrest is or where they stand. To me, there’s the obvious football game that Frank’s at watching Forrest play.

His lyrics reference the movie throughout the song, as he sings “I saw ya game, forrest, I was screamin run 44, but you kept runnin past the end zone, oh where’d you go Forrest”. That’s up to you as the listener to determine for yourself. He has amazing songwriting ability, so I feel as though it’s fully within his range of capabilities to write a love song about a male from the perspective of a female. I take this to be about his first love, but it can also be taken as just being written from the perspective of a girl. As I said before, the great thing about Frank is that he leaves tracks open for interpretation.

“Forrest Gump” is the song where Frank is directly talking to a male that he’s in love with, and the song is executed amazingly. It isn’t until the end of the song where we get any real indication as to whether or not Frank has any real feelings for Cleopatra, as their profession makes it near impossible to have any kind of relationship with each other, and by that time you’re ready for a second/third/fourth listen. The song goes from this style of singing to Frank describing a night at a swanky motel, and it becomes evident that Frank is Cleopatra’s pimp. Early in the songs he speaks about the “throne of our queen is empty” referring to Cleopatra going from one man to another, and later alludes to her suicide. This song transitions flawlessly into Pyramids – a ten minute space funk monster of a track that is a direct descendent from Purple Rain era Prince - and Frank does the excellent beat justice with lyrics about Cleopatra, cheetahs, and stripping, and the connections he makes are just unreal. “Crack Rock” is a song that discusses a drug addiction to crack, and Frank really delves deep into the familial problems associated with drug addiction, singing “you’re shuckin & jiving, stealin & robbin, to get the fixing that you’re itching for, your family stopped inviting you to things, won’t let you hold their infant”. He leaves lyrics open for interpretation, tells stories, sings of love and heartbreak, and a plethora of other topics. Lyrically, he is damn near flawless on this record. We saw it on Nostalgia/Ultra first, and it’s no different here. When I listen to Frank Ocean, I get the same vibe that I get when I listen to albums out of the Black Hippy camp – Frank refuses to put out a bad product. Frank Ocean has never been an overly powerful singer, opting rather to impress with songwriting second to none, an incredible ear for melody, and a clear and direct vision for his projects. Luckily, Frank Ocean has made a DAMN good album.Ĭhannel ORANGE starts off with a short intro and then dives head first into the first song. With all of this hype, it’s up to Frank to make a good or bad album, and it’s up to the listener to put any preconceived (however ignorant) notions aside and listen to the music for what it is.

That being said, it has nothing to do with the music and it should be judged on its’ own merits, based on the songwriting, production, vocals, and overall vibe of the record. The amount of courage necessary to do that is incredible, especially when considering the potential backlash. Personally, I applaud and respect him even more than I previously did. He recently put a phenomenally written note on his tumblr page detailing a love between him and another man, and it’s honestly one of the most touching stories I’ve ever read, which has lead most of the world to acknowledge that it’s a personal experience of Frank’s. There was a great deal of hype surrounding the new album by Odd Future singer/songwriter Frank Ocean.
